The mission of the Safety and Health Committee is to enhance and monitor safety programs or regulations developed to protect Minnesota’s fire service during the delivery of emergency services and training exercises.

The Safety and Health Committee will have their first meeting in 2018 at the conference. However, many of the committee members have been very active in advocating, promoting, and creating awareness for firefighter safety and health, through collaboration with the Minnesota Firefighter Initiative (MnFIRE).

MnFIRE has been working to promote best practices for firefighter health and safety by focusing on Cardiac Disease, Mental Health, and Cancer. These areas are the most relevant for firefighter health and safety today.

Additionally, a couple of members have been working specifically on the Rehab Program, started by a working group, including the MSFCA, in 2009. The Rehab Program allows departments to work on maintaining compliance with the NFPA 1584 standard, with minimal training and equipment.

This program is available on the MSFCA website. As we move through 2018 and into 2019, the Safety and Health Committee would like to continue to collaborate with our fire service partners and continue to enhance the safety and health of all the firefighters in Minnesota.
