Cloquet Area Fire District - District Fire Chief/Chief Executive Officer

The Cloquet Area Fire District (CAFD) is seeking an experienced District Fire Chief/Chief Executive Officer with a strong aptitude for fire services management and administration. The position is available due to the announced retirement of the current chief who has served the District since its inception in 2009. The CAFD spans over 275 square miles and services a population of 22,000, including the Fond du Lac Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation. Located just 15 minutes away from Lake Superior and the vibrant city of Duluth, CAFD is part of a strong regional economy with plenty of year-round recreational opportunities and urban amenities.

The District Fire Chief/Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the leadership, management, planning, organizing, and overseeing of all fire suppression, prevention, investigation, emergency medical services, and administrative support functions of the District. The District Fire Chief/Chief Executive Officer represents the District on Minnesota state legislative matters and will focus on advancing the District’s vision of being the state leader in providing regional fire and emergency medical services.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in fire science, public administration, management, business or a related field and ten years of progressively responsible experience in fire, EMS, life safety or a related field. Equivalent education and experience will be considered. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in public administration, including public finance and budgeting, grant writing, human resources and labor relations, and in all-hazards incident command and National Incident Management preferred. Experience working in a combination department is a plus.

The 2020 annual salary range for this position will be $95,000 - $125,000. The Cloquet Area Fire District offers an excellent benefits package with the option to participate in either the Minnesota Public Employee Association (PERA) General Plan or the PERA Police and Fire Plan. The District requires residency within 30 miles of the headquarters station within a reasonable period of time.
