Minnesota Fire Service Foundation - Open Letter After our last foundation board meeting it was decided that an open letter explaining where the Foundation is, would be a good idea. A newly improved scholarship application for the Minnesota Fire Service Foundation is now available. New this year is: - The age eligibility was raised to 28.
- The Scholarship application deadline has been extended to June 30, 2008. Scholarships will be chosen in July during the Foundation’s meeting.
- Scholarship money will no longer be given directly to the recipient. We will be sending it right to their school upon confirmation of their enrollment.
Click Here for Scholarship Information and Application Mutual Aid Report - Summary The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association conducted a survey regarding statewide mutual aid concerns. A total of 110 surveys were received and a summary of the results is now available for viewing. Click Here for a Copy of the SurveyVolunteer Statewide Pension Plan Draft Language This plan has been detailed before in broadcast e-mails, MSFCA conference presentation, Minnesota Fire Chief Magazine articles, along with regional meetings. Our goal is to get the language out to our members for comment prior to the February 12 session start. If majority wants to move forward we will introduce the bill this session with goal of passage to enable formation of a Board of Directors who can then start the process of creating a plan. Funding for a plan would occur in 2009 session. This is the draft language. Basic Animal rescue Training (BART) BART’s mission is to empower firefighters and other first responder personnel with the training, knowledge base and equipment necessary to safely and effectively handle domestic animals encountered in emergency situations, in order to help preserve human health, safety and well being. BART offers classes to first responders (firefighters, police, paramedics, EMTs and Community Emergency Response Teams) teaching restraint and handling of pets, horses and livestock, as well as patient assessment/first aid and CPR for companion animals. The Fire/EMS departments undergoing training receive an emergency medical kit that contains all the materials and supplies covered in the small animal course. Keeping The Lights On, The Trucks Running And The Volunteers Responding (Red Ribbon Report). The Volunteer and Combination Officers Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs published a newly released report entitled “Keeping The Lights On, The Trucks Running And The Volunteers Responding” which deals with “Managing the Business Of The Fire Department.” The first two reports are: Red Ribbon Report, "Lighting The Path of Evolution, Leading The Transition In Volunteer And Combination Fire Department;" and the Blue Ribbon Report, "A Call for Action, Preserving and Improving the Future of the Volunteer Fire Service." This is VCOS’s third in a series of studies dealing with issues faced by volunteer and combination fire departments. Public Safety Preparedness in the Age of Bioterrorism, SARS, and Other Emerging Health Threats
We are pleased to alert you that Minnesota Department of Health is distributing a new course called: “Public Safety Preparedness in the Age of Bioterrorism, SARS, and Other Emerging Health Threats” to provide law enforcement with basic information on infection control for communicable diseases and Minnesota's isolation and quarantine statute. This course is available free of charge to Minnesota's law enforcement, EMS, public safety and first responders from the Minnesota Department of Health. Avian Influenza (bird flu) - Preparation and Response The MSFCA Board of Directors is working on a plan to be prepared for a possible pandemic outbreak of the Avian Flu.
