2019 Duluth Fire Officer and Training Officer School Recap
Sandy Schueller, MSFCA Account Executive

The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association wrapped up its second Fire Officer and Training Officer School on March 17th at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. With over 250 attendees from 110 departments, and 25 vendors the weekend was a success!

The event started with registration and networking at Hoops Brewing on Friday night. Attendees were encouraged to pick up their registration packets and meet with other registrants and vendors.

Saturday morning began with Commissioner Harrington addressing all attendees and exhibitors. Classes featured on Saturday included The First Five Minutes – Actively Developing the Skills You Need (Ulie Seal and Tom Schmitz), Motivational Leadership The Tactics You Will Not Find in Any Fire Service Manual (Greg Hayes), Fire Ground Management – First Arriving Officer (Curt Mackey), Leadership in Supervision: Creating Environments for Professional Growth (Glen Davis), Critical Thinking for Fire Ground Operations (Lance Ross and Trevor Hamdorf), Intro to Fire Investigation (Kevin Mahle), 10 Minutes and Beyond (David Brosnahnan), Live Burn NFPA 1403 (BJ Jungmann), Incident Safety Officer (Jim Flanders), New Training Officer: I’m the Training Officer, Now What? (Ed Hoffman), and Dealing with Difficult People and Their Organizational Impacts (Jerry Streich). Saturday ended with a networking event with vendors and families at the DECC.

Sunday wrapped up the school with the continuation of most of the classes with the addition of the following Emerging Communication Technology in Public Safety (Erik Jankila), Drone Team Creation and Use in the Fire Service (Nick Fleming and Robert Morehouse), and Technology for Officers (Shea Chwialkowski).

Thank you to everyone involved in the planning process of this successful event as well as all those that attended and exhibited! Without you, the event would have not been a success. We hope to see everyone back in Duluth for the Annual Conference this October!
