Tom Miller - Vice-Presidential Candidate
Share |

1. The majority of the Minnesota Fire Chiefs are volunteer. As the only rural/volunteer candidate for either Vice President or President in over 6 years, I am seeking your support. I believe the board needs to work to continually improve our organization. Rural fire chiefs across the state need to be properly represented; from the need of quality Fire Officer Schools (and for quality support which occurs in the background), recruitment and retention issues (which are similar but not the same in Rural Minnesota vs. Metro) and more.

2. I am a strong believer that every member should be able to ask questions, raise concerns and have a professional discussion without retaliation from board members. Sadly, this is not the current situation. It will take strong leadership to turn this around. I believe the board of directors should work as a unified team and address questions and/or concerns of the members in a positive and professional manner.

3. Regional Directors should be elected by their regions as they have for the past 35+ years, compared to being appointed by the President. I was a vocal supporter of this bylaw change which is now on the ballot for you to decide. I feel you should have the right to decide whom is representing you at the board level; this has NOT been the case over the last two years.

4. The MSFCA needs to be managed by a Minnesota firm. I believe that the quality of support for our sponsors, members and committees will NOT be at the same level it is currently at. No one has been able to explain what “crisis” we are facing that caused us to hire a firm from Milwaukee (MSFCA is doing better now than it ever has).

Service and Family
I understand the challenges a volunteer Fire Chief faces, including the sacrifices your family makes. I am extremely fortunate to have the support of my wife and three children to serve the MSFCA as your Vice President.
I learned at an early age what it means to serve the community. While I was still in high school, I achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, enlisted in the Army National Guard and started my career in EMS.
Upon receiving my Paramedic Certification, I worked providing ALS and Critical Care Patient Care and started as a flight paramedic in 1998. In 1999, I joined the Fire Department. Simultaneously, I worked to advance my leadership role with the Pine City Fire Department. In 2008, I was promoted to Fire Chief and have served in that capacity since.

• The Miller family has over 75 years of service to the Pine City Fire Department.
I will work to get your voices heard at ALL levels, your opinions will NOT fall on deaf ears. I would ask that you to consider Tim Butler for the next President. Tim and I share the same beliefs for the future of the MSFCA;
• While the board is the governing body of this organization, our direction comes from the membership.
• Together we can ensure that the board will move in the right direction to serve our members in the areas and issues we collectively define.
• We need to continue building upon the success of the last two years, and the recent decision by the board to go out of state gives us no chance to do that.
