To the Minnesota Fire Service;
I take great pride in being part of the Minnesota Fire Service. In the more than 28 years I have served, I have had the great fortune of working for exceptional organizations who recognized the importance of the MSFCA and the value of membership. The honor and integrity that is part of our culture is key to our success. This is a highly engaged group of fire service professionals that work towards building effective fire service leaders. Growing up and farming in rural Iowa provides perspective for me when I consider the challenges faced by greater Minnesota. There is not a one size fits all solution and it is imperative we provide leadership by listening in order to better address the challenges.

I have worked in a variety of staffing models including time as a paid-on-call firefighter, a career Assistant Chief in a combination model and now Chief of St. Louis Park, a combination department with organized labor and duty crew part-time firefighters. I have had a broad exposure to many of the challenges faced by all facets of the Minnesota Fire Service including budgets, strategic planning, recruitment, retention, the future of EMS, leadership/succession planning and racial equity, and I have been part of creating solutions to address these challenges. I hope to share those experiences during meaningful discussions about how to advance the work that has already been done.

I am encouraged by the collaboration that exists between the fire service organizations towards the greatest challenges of our people in the areas of cancer prevention, emotional wellness, and cardiac health. I look forward to providing leadership towards advancing those initiatives on behalf of our employees and their families.

The success of our organization comes from its membership and the great work the committees do to make a difference. I have seen the innovation and creativity that has come from within the organization and the willingness to listen to all stakeholders. I proudly stand alongside Fire Chief John Cunningham who is running for President. We share the same values of servant leadership and optimism about where we have been and where we are going. We invite you to become more informed about how we differ and what others are saying about our style of leadership and the six strategic initiatives created from our conversations with Minnesota fire leaders at our website While on the web site visit our Thoughts page where we share our thoughts on the issues facing our members through our weekly blog posts and our opt in newsletter which goes out electronically. You can subscribe to receive the newsletter from that page.

In our collective travels across the state visiting regional meetings and chiefs meetings it is clear that there is a great deal of pride in the MSFCA and people are looking for ways to engage. I want to be part of a leadership team that removes the barriers, recognizes the efforts of those that serve, and respects the traditions that define the Minnesota Fire Service. It is the beliefs of Chief Cunningham and myself that the organization has never been better positioned for what lies ahead.

It would be an honor to serve the firefighters of Minnesota as part of collaborative management team in the position of Vice President. Feel free to contact me at 612-790-4019 or email me at

Humbly submitted,
Steve Koering
