Tim Butler - Presidential Candidate
Share |

Hello! I am Tim Butler, Fire Chief for the City of Saint Paul, and I am running for President of the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association. I have had the distinct honor of serving alongside MSFCA members for more than 23 years, and I am energized by the wealth of talent and experience within our membership! It is my intention to continue to support and serve our organization, and I would like to continue that work as the next President.

I am proud to be a rural Minnesota farm boy at heart! Raised in North Branch, MN, I was raised on the philosophies of hard work, helping others, and deep respect for those who rushed to serve their neighbors when the fire siren sounded in town. I cut my firefighting teeth on the occasional brush fire on the farm and once saved our family’s 1885 farmhouse from a basement furnace fire as a teenager. After high school, I joined the US Coast Guard and learned shipboard firefighting and damage control at US Navy firefighting school. In 1986, while serving on active duty in Houston, TX, I answered a call for volunteers for the Forest Bend Volunteer Fire Department in Webster, TX. I joined, loved it, became a certified volunteer Firefighter for the State of Texas, and ended up becoming President of the department a few short years later.

Military transfers brought me back to Duluth, Minnesota, where I settled in the rural town of Twig, and promptly joined the Grand Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department in 1988. In 1990, I left Coast Guard active duty and moved to Saint Paul, joining the Saint Paul Fire Department to serve as a chief officer in Communications, then Emergency Management, and finally Fire Chief – a position I have served in since 2007. I am proud of my small town upbringing, and I am grateful for the experiences I’ve had serving in the military, and rural, suburban, and urban communities as a Firefighter, EMT, Emergency Manager, and Fire Chief.

The MSFCA has entrusted me to a number of leadership roles since 1991, including: service on the Radio Communications, Legislative, and Executive Committees; nearly ten years of service on the Board of Directors; chair of the Conference Committee for four of the most successful fall conferences in Association history; an MSFCA representative to the Fire Service Foundation; current chair of the Communications and Policy Committee; and current Vice President of the Association. At the 2014 MSFCA fall conference, I had the very humbling and distinct honor of being named Fire Officer of the Year for large communities.

The fire service in Minnesota is my passion, and I have been a champion of fire sprinklers, fire prevention, statewide response assets, and working to ensure that Firefighters are honored for their service and never forgotten for their sacrifices. I am very proud of my history as both a volunteer and a career Firefighter. As MSFCA President, I will use my experience and my love for both big and small departments - and both career and volunteer Firefighters - to find solutions for the challenges we all face in keeping our citizens served and our Firefighters safe.

My professional certifications include being a nationally registered EMT, a state licensed Firefighter, and a state certified Emergency Manager. I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Science at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT in 1981, and a Master of Arts Degree in Public Safety Administration from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2009. I proudly served for more than 22 year in the US Coast Guard and US Coast Guard Reserves, and was mobilized stateside and overseas four times for national military contingencies. I have lived in Maplewood, MN since 1991 with my wife, Sue. We have been married for more than 32 years and we have three adult children.

I thank you in advance for your consideration and the opportunity to serve the members of the MSFCA as your next President of the Association!
