2010 Member Services Committee - George Esbensen
It is my pleasure to have been selected as the Chair of the Member Services Committee. The committee has only met once since January and I take full responsibility for that lack of meetings.
At our meeting in June we decided to reshape how the Member Services Committee delivers its value to the organization. In the past, the Member Services Committee has offered an array of services, all of which had to be requested by a given chief officer. While this is an approach that surely must have worked in the past, it doesn’t appear to have been a solution that many, if any, chief officers had taken advantage of recently.
The committee members decided that our best approach to providing an array of services to our members would be to collect articles of interest on a regular basis and place them on the MFSCA website for easy access. Looking for a basic Pumper Truck specification? That specification would be on the website along with some contact information so more information could be gathered from the folks at the department that created the specification. A similar approach will be used for each of the sub-groups within the Member Services Committee.
So look for a lot more from the Member Services Committee in the coming months on the MFSCA website. If you have additional suggestions and ideas feel free to contact me directly at: gesbensen@edenprairie.org

The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association, MARAC and the MSFDA have joined forces to provide our members education in the relief association and benefits arena. The MSFCA Board approved a planrecommended by a task force they had appointed, to study if this relationship would be beneficial to our members. This agreement will l form an ongoing partnership with MARAC to provide high quality relief association and benefits training to our members at a reasonable cost and convenient time.MARAC has been providing this service to their members for several years and it has proven quite helpful. Many of the requests for this type of training come from fire chiefs who are, under state law, ex-officio board members of their relief associations.
This relationship will benefit all involved. The MSFCA's communication mediums will benefit MARAC's advertising of the program, and the funds raised will support this and future educational programs sponsored by MSFCA.
Costs of training can be reduced by having the education provided in your town for all of our board members at the same time. Questions specific to your relief association type can be answered by qualified instructors. This should ensure your annual reports and other paperwork is filed properly the first time so your two-percent check is not delayed and the money can be invested immediately.

There is a lot of talent in Minnesota and we want to share it. I know I always enjoy guest speakers at our station drills. But, how do I find a good speaker that I can afford. It is our goal to put together a list of speakers that we can call on to come and visit your training session. Some speakers are free, some only charge travel expenses and some will charge a fee. We know that you will enjoy their message when they do come because we will have heard them speak and know what their message is.
Chief Rich Gasaway the chair of this committee. Watch this space for information on speakers. If you have a special need you should cal Chief Gasaway direct. He is more than willing to help you.
Are you a speaker or know of a quality speaker that you think the rest of use would like to hear. Please give rich a call we will add then to the list.

Training is hard. We all struggle with drills trying to keep them informative, interesting, fun, and up to date. We want to help. We have assembled the help of other training officers in Minnesota to share the information you need to execute effective training drills that will meet the training standards
If you need help please contact Sarah Larson or Jeremie Baker. They will help you find the information you need or the person you need to talk to that can help make your training program the best it can be.
If you would like to be on the list of contributors we encourage you to contact Sarah and let her know what areas of expertise you can contribute to help your fellow training officers.
