Leadership AwardMichael Campion - Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner For many years the fire service has enjoyed a good relationship with the Department of Public Safety. Commissioner Michael Campion has taken that relationship to the next level. Commissioner Campion has shown a genuine interest in the fire service. He has shown this with his involvement in this conference, he doesn’t just visit our conference, He stays. His regular articles in the Fire Chief’s Magazine are well read. When there is controversy he brings our leaders together for a talk. He is a genuine team builder. Commissioner Campion has an unprecedented history of support for the fire service. That genuine interest we talked about has been passed down through his management team. He has taught them the true value of the fire service. He has given us the gift of access to his office and staff. He views his department as a vehicle to be of service to the public. We honor Commissioner Campion today for his continued support of the fire service and for the difference he has made in the fire service. We think he has been a wonderful steward of the Department of Public Satefy and its many missions.

Leadership AwardNyle Zikmund - MSFCA Legislative Committee Chairman I’m pretty sure most you know Chief Nyle Zikmund, our next Leadership award recipient. You have probably seen Chief Zikmund at your station or at your regional meeting talking about pension issues, Legislative issues, or with fire prevention issues. Many of you have seen him throughout this conference teaching the “New Chiefs” class, giving updates on legislation or giving free advice on your pension issues. His name is familiar to us for all the positive work he has done for MSFCA. He is always willing to discuss the issue of the day and to help you solve your local issues. His cell phone number is widely distributed and he will always take your call. Why does he do it? He does it for the good of the fire service. Chief Zikmund works tirelessly on behalf of the MSFCA and the fire service. He is the chair of the MSFCA legislative committee. He is a member of the Education Committee, Code Committee, Public Education Committee, and the Member Services Committee. He represents MSFCA on the Fire Service Advisory Committee, The Construction Codes Advisory Council, Fire Service Joint Council, and is the Chair of MnFAC – The joint legislative fire service group. Chief Zikmund is the President of the Great Lakes Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Chief Zikmund works well with his three city councils and Fire Department Board of directors in his own community. He has had a very effective history at the Minnesota State Capitol, and is working on national legislation that will be of great benefit to all firefighters in Minnesota and Nationwide. He is a Champion of Fire Prevention. He has dared to make a difference in the fire service state wide. He teaches leadership at the National Fire Academy and today we honor him as a leader in the MSFCA and the Minnesota Fire Service.

Leadership AwardChief Mike Ebner For the MSFCA Leadership Award, I would like you to travel with me to a small Minnesota town named Rushford. The fire department has twenty-eight (28) members that covers 185 square miles out of one station with seven trucks. They average 60 calls a year. If you recall, major floods hit this community. They lost two of their trucks, a rescue rig and a tanker. Twenty-two (22) of their twenty-eight (28) firefighters had damage to their own homes or businesses. They became isolated from all help. Fillmore County Sherriff Darrell Jensen had to be picked up by boat to be taken to the command post where he and Chief Mike Ebner worked together to manage this incident, day and night, from Sunday until Friday. The Rushford Fire Department, under the leadership of Chief Ebner, had the foresight to develop an evacuation plan. The area had five sectors and the Rushford Fire Department had an officer assigned to each sector. The fire department had rescued 300 people before mutual aid arrived. When doing research on the incident, everyone we talked to said that Chief Mike Ebner was a true leader. They used words like "high morals and values," "great to work with," and "putting community before self." You see, Mike's own home was destroyed by the flood. Mike and his family were displaced from their home yet they all agreed to put their community first and went to work. Mike wanted us to know how thankful he is to the twenty-seven (27) communities from Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin for their invaluable contributions. Chief Ebner is a very humble person and he knows this was a team effort. We congratulate the community for a job well done. |
