Tony Richardson Award 2004Gary Welter, Lake Johanna Fire Department, received the Tony Richardson Award for his cover photo on the September/October 2003 issue of the Minnesota Fire Chief Magazine. COVERGary Welter is a member of the Lake Johanna Fire Department, serving Arden Hills, North Oaks and Shoreview. Gary's full-time job is as a graphic artist. Gary enjoys fire calls and training, as well as representing the fire department at community events. A trained artist and former illustrator in the Minnesota National Guard, Gary is also well versed in computer graphics and photography. These skills were combined to create the illustration used on the cover of this month's Minnesota Fire Chief Magazine. To Gary, the most striking thing about an actual fire is the dramatic contrast between thick, black smoke and brilliant flames. He attempted to capture that feeling in the image, which started out as a sketch of a photo from a fire scene and was reworked into a much larger mixed media illustration. |
